Extended Schools Co-ordinator - Fiona Whiting from Hethersett has been appointed extended schools co-ordinator for seven schools in Hethersett, Little Melton, Cringlford and Mulbarton. We spoke to Fiona about her new role and you can read the story by clicking here.

Hawks Record - Hethersett Hawks/Swinton and Co cycle speedway put in a record performance in the second regional round of the Wosskow Brown British Youth and Junior League held in Norwich - they amassed the highest score the club has achieved in this competition. Cricket Boost - Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club is continuing to improve the facilities at its Flordon ground. A £6,000 grant from Awards for All will allow the club to improve its practice facilities by building an additional double net bay with artificial batting ends. This will give the club four separate practice nets with artificial surfaces and two additional areas for use with a wheelaway net and bowling machine. The club is also busy raising funds for an electronic scoreboard.

 

Ladies Cup Final - Hethersett Athletic Ladies will be playing Barking in the final of the Eastern Region League Cup at Soham FC this coming Sunday. You can read about the cup final by going to the club's official web site by clicking here.

 

It's Showtime - Yvonne School of Dance is busy preparing for its bi-ennial spectacular at Norwich Theatre Royal in May. The theme for this year's show is Broadway. To read about the show click here.

 

Players Poised - Hethersett Players next production will be an evening of two plays on 20th and 21st June in Hethersett Village Hall. The group will be performing the comedies Parentcraft by Stephen Smith and Over His Dead Body by Jack Booth. The evening will also feature strawberries and cream in the interval. Tickets are priced at £7 and can be booked by telephoning 01603 811005. 

 

Table-Toppers - A table top sale is being held at Woodcote Sheltered Housing complex in Firs Road, Hethersett, on Saturday (26th April) from 1 to 4 p.m. A number of community groups will be offering items for sale and there will be an auction at 3 p.m. The day will also include cream teas and other refreshments. This year’s Woodcote summer fete will take place on 12th July. Both events are being fully supported by the recently formed Friends of Woodcote group.

 

Quizzical - A record 23 teams took part in the annual Hethersett High School quiz organised by the Friends group in Hethersett Village Hall. The extremely active Friends group has recently presented the school with £3,000 of display boards for the art department and a vacuum forming machine for the design and technology department. The group’s annual village garage sale will take place this year on June 22nd.

Old-Timers Return - The football season may be coming to an end, but Hethersett Athletic have a number of major events planned for the next couple of months. Over 70 former players will be returning to the club from all over the United Kingdom and further afield for a special match in memory of Lee Thompson, a Hethersett player who was tragically killed in a road accident in 1999. Members of the team that reached the final of the Norfolk Sunday Senior Cup will be re-united for a game against other “golden oldies” from the club’s past. Social Club Dates - Hethersett Social Club's annual general meeting takes place on Monday 21st April at 8 p.m. Members will need to show their membership cards to gain admission. The club's open day will be on August 9th when everyone is welcome to look round. New photos of the club are available by clicking here.

 

Players Needed - Hethersett Playing Field Bowls Club is looking for new members irrespective of their standard. The club play their matches at Hethersett Memorial Playing Field with the onus on friendship and enjoyment.Members of the Norfolk Federation, the club play competitively in the City League and the afternoon Age Concern League. There is also plenty of opportunity for social bowls with roll ups every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon during the season which starts in April. “We are looking for new members who would like to try the sport. We are a friendly club, although there is a competitive edge for those that want it. We would like to hear from people of any age and any level of experience from beginners upwards,” said club vice-captain Tony Dunton. The club also organisers social evenings and events and work has been carried out during the winter to improve the playing surface. Hawks' Double - Hethersett Hawks/Swinton & Co Cycle Speedway finally got their season off to a start after three consecutive weather-wrecked weeks. It was worth the wait, however, as the club put together two impressive performances to achieve a winning double on the refurbished Memorial Field track. The new surface worked wonders as the Under-16s kicked off with a comfortable 92-67 South-East Youth League victory over Ipswich with Harley Hamill top scoring with 20. Hethersett also made short work of Ipswich in the senior Norfolk and Suffolk League, riding to a 104-74 victory with Dave Martin, David Adams and Jazz Abbott all in impressive form. Scores: Hethersett Under-16s 92 (Harley Hamill 20, Dan Chambers 18+2, Phil Adams 19, Ben Collins 15+4) Ipswich 67 (George Solomon 16+2, Jordan Stant 16+1, Daniel Knights 12). Special Library Event - Throughout May Norfolk libraries will be celebrating the rich contribution film makes to our culture under the title of "Watch the film, read the book." There will be a special event at Hethersett Library on Saturday 3rd May when children's author Robert Crowther will be helping youngsters to make a pop up of their favourite film. The event takes place from 11 a.m until noon and is suitable for youngsters aged eight and over. Booking is essential on 01603 810188. Throughout the month DVDs can be rented on a three for the price of two basis.

 

In Fashion - A fashion show by Fernandez Fashions of Wymondham at Hethersett Methodist Church raised over £160 for church funds and the Vidyal Trust which works in deprived areas of India. Over 50 people attended the evening.

 

Ready for Cricket - Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club have been preparing for the new season when they will field three teams in the Norfolk League. We will keep you up to date on their results throughout the season in a special section that can be accessed by clicking here.

 

Fund-raisers - A cake and craft stall held outside Hethersett Library by the First Hethersett Brownies raised £64.75 for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Tony and Margaret Dunton’s annual Christmas display at their Hethersett home raised over £575 with £275 being donated to the Air Ambulance and £300 to other causes.

Footballers through to Cup Final - Hethersett Athletic Ladies soccer team have reached the final of the Eastern Region League Cup and their dreams of a league and cup double are still alive. They beat Haringey Borough 4-2 in the semi-finals and now face Barking in the final at Soham on Sunday April 27th. Barking were surprise winners over Norwich City Ladies in their semi-final. In Fashion - A fashion show by Fernandez Fashions of Wymondham is being held at Hethersett Methodist Church on Friday April 11th at 7.30 p.m. Entrance is £2 and items modelled will be on sale on the evening. proceeds from the event will go towards church funds and the Vidyal Trust which works in deprived areas of India.
