Grandfather by Bea Ewart

In memory of L/Cpl George Henry Grant, First Battalion Scots Guards - Killed 15th September, 1916, Ginchy, France

Today is the anniversary

of your death.

You have been in my heart

as long as I can remember

You died in the field that day,

a brutal end

to a life of service -

from Bobby on the beat

to Tommy in the trenches

What made you leave

a wife and two dear children,

only you could tell.

So many years have passed,

your wife and children gone:

Only I, your survivor,

remember the sacrifice you made

this day in the field

in the Great War

September 1994 Bea Ewart
