Olympic Update

More than 10 come and try it sports will be featured on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field on July 24th as part of the village’s culture, fun and sporting weekend in support of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Tennis. bowls, athletics, football, hockey, martial arts, golf, cycle speedway, fencing, volleyball, boccia, dodge ball and tug of war will all be featured with the onus on everybody being able to have a go irrespective of ability levels, fitness levels, age or handicap. It is hoped to add a number of other sports to the list in the near future. There will also be a number of other activities including skipping and hoola hoops.

Sport in the Park is just one of the events that will be featured throughout the weekend starting with a Hethersett’s Got Talent competition in the Village Hall on the Friday night and running through Sport in the Park on Saturday and a Sunday full of activities including a “run the square” two mile event, an Olympic themed church service at Hethersett High School, a ladies five-a-side football tournament on the Memorial Field and a concert of light classics by the Pulham Orchestra in Hethersett Parish Church.

The weekend will mix activities with history thanks to the re-creation of a village legacy. Run the Square is a two mile road race/fun run along an oblong course through the Hethersett of the 1940s and 1950s. All ages and abilities are welcome with people both running and walking the course.

The events are being supported by a number of local and county-wide organisations including South Norfolk District Council, Active Norfolk, Hethersett Bowls Club, Hethersett Athletic Football Club, Hethersett Parish Council, Hethersett Hawks Cycle Speedway Club, village schools, Hethersett Jubilee Youth Club, Hethersett Social Club, Hethersett and District Churches Together, the Hethersett Environmental Action Team and local businesses.

Entry forms for Hethersett’s Got Talent and Run the Square events are now available on the Hethersett village web site at www.hethersett.org,uk and the village’s events are also highlighted on the official London 2012 Olympic web site at www.london2012.com

Although planning for this year’s events is not finished, the village organising group is already looking ahead to July 2011 when further events will be held.
