I’ve always thought it important for the lady of the house to have an area to call her own – somewhere she can retreat to after a busy day, a sanctuary. Up until now I’ve never had this – we have had the same bedroom and decor that came with the house when we bought it more than 25 . It was functional but not luxurious. Big enough but not well designed. Clean enough but not cosy. I say ‘lady of the house’ totally tongue in cheek, because my friends tease me about being like the TV character Hyacinth Bucket (she pronounces it ‘Bouquet’!) with some of my decor choices! However I hope that when you see my finished design, you’ll agree it’s totally modern and not at all chintzy!
Basically there were always other home design priorities – the kids came first and each have had their rooms painted at least twice. But finally it was my turn and the last few months have seen us ripping down walls, installing ambient lighting, fitting new carpets and creating a beautiful bedroom that is not only a sanctuary for me but also suits our needs perfectly with wardrobes designed to house all our clothing and accessories and a beautiful dressing table area that I’ve always wanted.
Let me share some before pictures…
Before: I cringe when I see how cluttered and messy it was but it’s amazing what you get used to over a long period!
During the work – we had knocked out a wall to create a new ensuite
Now here’s the glamorous ‘after‘…
Plus we have a gorgeous new bathroom!
We were able to paint the bedroom in what we had left over from my son’s bedroom makeover a year ago and we painted the bathroom in what was left over from my office makeover! I love it when we can save money, and I was pleased with our IKEA wardrobes too as we saved more than £2.5k by getting the units from IKEA and installing them ourselves Vs the quotes we’d had for a local company to come in and fit the wardrobes.
My dressing table area was the bit that I wanted to invest in – I knew that we wouldn’t be doing another bedroom design again so this one had to count. I had the electricians install me several double plug sockets including at dressing table desk height for my hairdryer to go into and these sockets also have a USB plug for easy phone charging without taking up a plug socket! I have always wanted to a Hollywood mirror since I was a kid, so that was a must! I got three strips of 5 lights from Wayfair and positioned them around a mirror hung portrait style. Then I found a fab glass dressing table online and a clear perspex chair that I think sets it off beautifully.
I’m delighted with the end result and it’s making me want to spend a lot of time in the bedroom – I love an early night!!
